U.S. Carries Out Obama’s Promise, Begins Air Strikes in Syria to Combat ISIS
According to the Huffington Post, the Pentagon confirmed that Monday night marked the first of what is sure to be many attacks on ISIS groups in Syria. The U.S. along with five other Arab countries launched airstrikes into Syria, fulfilling the promise that President Obama made to “destroy and degrade” the terrorist group. Fighter jets, bombers and Tomahawk cruise missiles were used in the strikes as part of the campaign that President Barack Obama authorized two weeks.
Along with claiming parts of Syria, ISIS members killed thousands of people and beheaded two American journalists in gruesome videos they then shared with the world. The airstrikes took place at around 8:50 P.M. EDT by the U.S., Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
The airstrikes lasted about 90 minutes, however, as per a U.S. official, they were to continue for several more hours and were to target Islamic State group headquarters,Raqqa, in eastern Syria.
Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby released a statement Monday night saying:
“I can confirm that U.S. military and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against ISIL terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles. Given that these operations are ongoing, we are not in a position to provide additional details at this time. The decision to conduct theses strikes was made earlier today by the U.S. Central Command commander under authorization granted him by the commander in chief.”
