Israeli Defense Forces Shot Down Syrian Jet Over Israel
Israeli forces shot down a Syrian aircraft Tuesday morning that attempting to infiltrate Israeli airspace in the Golan Heights. According to Reuters, Israeli military sources said the plane apparently crossed by accident into Israeli-controlled airspace over the Golan Heights – where fighting from Syria’s civil war has spilled over occasionally – and was not on a mission to attack Israeli targets.
The report stated:
The decision to down the jet was made after 1:20 minutes of flight; when the Patriot hit the plane, the Syrian pilots had already turned around and flown back into their territory.
The two pilots had apparently managed to operate their ejection seats within that timeframe, as they were captured in footage released by the Syrian Revolution Coordinators Union parachuting to the ground.
This is the first incident of its kind in over three decades.
