Jealous Boyfriend Bites Girlfriend’s Lip, Attempts to Disfigure Her [GRAPHIC]
Rhys Culley, 23, and Chantelle Ward, 18, have been dating for almost two years and a half year. Their relationship took a turn for the worse when Culley felt insecure about his relationship with Ward. The shopfitter was worried about what his teenage girlfriend would be up to while he was away.
Miss Ward told jurors during the trial Culley had tried to kiss her and asked her if she still loved him before the bite.
She said: ‘He put his whole mouth around my lips and pulled, I thought that my whole lip had come off. There was blood everywhere.’
The attack happened on February 22 after the couple had been out at the County Public House in South Fields. They had been out celebrating Ward’s mother’s birthday and around 10:30pm Ward, the defendant and her aunt Susan Stewart shared a taxi home, dropping her aunt off first.
When the couple got to their house, things took a turn. The two got into an argument regarding a conversation Miss Ward had with another man on Facebook earlier in the month. The court was told when Culley found out the messages weren’t on Facebook anymore, he became very angry with Ward and began shouting and accusing the teen of having something to hide.
Culley then proceeded to get physical with Ward. He took her phone and locked the doors so she couldn’t leave. Prosecutor Emma Dowling said Culley kicked and punched Miss Ward, pulling her hair, threw her into furniture and threw things at her before finally launching the violent facial attack. Miss Dowling said that after Culley had bitten his victim, he ‘rubbed his face in hers, smearing the blood across her face and then he stuck his tongue into her mouth.’
When the police arrived Culley was arrested and Ward was taken to the hospital to have her injuries examined.
Jurors heard Culley bit down on the victim’s lip with the same force that would be needed to bite through a 1cm thick piece of rubber. Miss Ward also suffered bruises and scratches to her head and body after the attack.
Rhys Culley, of South Shields, Tyneside is currently in custody and will be sentenced next month. Greame Cook, defending Rhys, applied for his bail to be allowed to continue while he awaits sentence, but the Judge, Miss Recorder Wigin, refused.
During his evidence Cully said he did not mean to harm his ‘beautiful’ girlfriend, who he knew he was lucky to have.
The judge said: ‘The sentence will inevitably be custody.’
